“It all begins with a Jewish priest, Zechariah, who lived when Herod was king of Judea.” (Luke 1:5 NLT)
With Advent season upon us, let’s reflect once more on the “Christmas Story”, because it has a lot to do with your story.
God stuff begins when you least expect it.
The Christmas story begins with Zachariah and Elizabeth, who is Mary’s cousin. They certainly hoped for children. But were they expecting John the Baptist?
Now aged well beyond child bearing years, we find them still being faithful to their calling.
In the midst of living out the purpose of human life as meant for them, the angel appears and the blessing of God is realized.
Hope is fulfilled.
What Are You Hoping For?
Three things from Zachariah and Elizabeth’s story will encourage you.
#1 First, they were descendants of Abraham. They were the Promised Ones living in the Promised Land. They were filled with hope based on a promise from God who does not break His promises.
You are no different. You are God’s Promised One!
“And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise” (Galatians 3:29).
#2 Second, they were righteous and blameless before God.
You are too!
“What then shall we say? That the Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have obtained it, a righteousness that is by faith;” (Romans 9:30).
#3 Third, they were living the lives they were meant to live (the purpose of human life) and being faithful in their calling.
These three truths are the “evidence of things hoped for”.
The Question Remains
Am I experiencing the purpose of human life by living the life I was meant to live and being faithful to my calling?
True hope empowers you to continue to do the work you are called to do regardless of your circumstances.
While you wait expectantly for your desire to be fulfilled, “May the God of Hope fill you with all joy and peace.” (Romans 15:13)
